WHO WE ARE
The Thomas Foundation was founded in 1989 to support Herbert J. Thomas Jr., Memorial Hospital and later Saint Francis Hospital, previously known as Thomas Health. These hospitals have been serving our communities for over 170 years. As a non-profit foundation, we practice philanthropy to cultivate donor relationships; these donations, gifts, grants, and endowments serve to provide valued resources that support Thomas Health’s mission to deliver compassionate and exceptional healthcare to improve the well-being of the communities we serve.
On January 1, 2023, Thomas Health became a full member of the West Virginia University Health System. Now known as WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals, this new partnership will expand clinical programs and services and enhance the overall health of our community.
At the Thomas Foundation, we ensure all donations are stewarded directly toward the greatest needs of the hospitals and the patients we serve. We partner with individuals and corporations who share our vision and support our philanthropic efforts. All monies raised by the Thomas Foundation remain in our local community. The Foundation is guided by a Board of Directors comprised of community leaders who oversee the work of the Foundation through board meetings, various committee meetings and close collaboration with the Executive Director and staff.
WHAT WE DO
On a yearly basis, our most common contributions include providing free flu shots, offering emergency relief funding for employees, helping meet patients’ needs, partnering to fund the Junior and Senior Nursing academies, awarding grants to hospital departments, supporting employees with scholarships including nursing, and raising funds for hospital needs. While those actions aren’t the only things we do, they provide a great snapshot of the type of work we focus on. If there is a specific donation request or a need you feel passionate about, please contact our office. We are always willing to work with you to meet your philanthropic goals or needs.
