What’s New

OUR IMPACT

This year has bought new challenges unlike any other we have experienced in health care. As social workers, our role is to assist with discharge planning for our patients. Issues such as homelessness, an elderly person having to decide to purchase their medications or food, and the opioid epidemic are issues that impact healthcare and are also prevalent in our community. The GAP Fund, which is funded by the Thomas Foundation, allows us to help our patients by providing medications and food to those needing assistance at discharge. This year, the GAP Fund has assisted in helping over 300 patients with over one thousand prescriptions. We Thank you for your support of our department but more importantly helping to ensure our patients are receiving what they need when they are discharged from our facility.

Susan Miller, BSW, LSW, Social Services Manager, WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals

I want to say “Thank you” to the Thomas Foundation for choosing me as one of the scholarship candidates. The scholarship has covered a portion of my tuition allowing me to take the steps to better myself for me and my family. I emphasize the importance of education to my girls, and this opportunity has given me the chance to set an example for them without taking on the full burden of educational expenses. I look forward to my advancing my career with WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals!

Dorethea Taylor-Henshaw, LPN, Nursing Student

The Thomas Foundation has provided me with multiple learning opportunities. When I was in middle school I had the opportunity to attend the Junior Nursing Academy which is funded by the Thomas Foundation. This Academy gave me further insight into nursing and inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. While in nursing school, I received a scholarship from the Foundation and worked as a Nurse Extern. The scholarship and extern experience positively impacted me and were beneficial to me during nursing school. After graduating, I started my career as a nurse at Thomas Memorial Hospital. The learning opportunities and experience the Foundation and WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals have provided me with and continue to provide me with are invaluable.

The staff of WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals’ Labor and Delivery unit was there for us during our family’s most stressful times. Their compassion and skill made it possible for us to have three healthy babies. We can never repay them.

Zak & Ashley Ritchie, Grateful Patients

“The Thomas Foundation has afforded patients luxuries while they are going through the fight of, and for, their life. We, the cancer center, cannot thank them enough for allowing us to honor our patients with the best – the best care, the best place, and the best hospital. We will forever be grateful.”

Erin Jackson, RN, Director of Oncology Services, WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals

Recently, I was able to work with the Thomas Foundation to secure six new sleeper loveseats for our unit. Through the generous donation of a former patient and her family, plus a matching grant from the Foundation, we were able to update our older furniture with brand-new and comfortable loveseats. These will be greatly appreciated by our patients’ support system as they provide a stylish, and comfortable place to rest.
